Inaugurating July 2015 in Milan’s prestigious La Fabbrica del Vapore, under the patronage of EXPO MILANO, Alma Mater is an artwork, a forest made up of 140 loudspeakers, from which emerge hundreds of voices, chants and whispers of grandmothers from all over the world, combined with sounds of the femminine archetype in nature – seismic vibrations, volcanos, sounds of oceans and waters, all produced in collaboration with international research and musicological centers.

Alma Mater is a journey to our origins, ideally represented by the presence of an original version of the foremost artwork “Il Terzo Paradiso” by Michelangelo Pistoletto, created solely for this occasion. The poetic and meaningful light design of the installation has been projected by Enzo Catellani (Catellani&Smith).

Completing the multi-sensorial experience is the return onto the scene of the ballet, the legendary stars who shaped the history of Teatro alla Scala, Liliana Cosi and Carla Fracci, prance through video projections all in the live presence of local lacemakers whom weave thread through bobbins creating an unexpected lacework.

Alma Mater, a catalyst for numerous concerts, workshops, panels and other events which takes place during the entire duration of the installation, will also be furnished with a wine bar of Sicily’s utmost excellence – Cusumano, and Alma Materhealth bar, dedicated to healthy local organic food.
