Artist Statement

Treiops Treyfid's conceptually-based work is defined by relationships between humans, materials, and hence, our environment and the ways in which we live. A majority of his current work involves sculpture, installation, mixed media series, and more recently new media performances. Treyfid's body of work dating from the early '90s to now, can best be described as multi-media in the sense that he incorporates all genre from painting to sound.

His use of specifically selected materials, which themselves carry relevant and easily accessible meanings, creates social parodies or farces in beautiful, unmistakable ways. Ranging from bulk man-made materials, such as Styrofoam, plastic bags, cardboard and Plexi-glass, to leather, holograms, and polyester resin, Treyfid crosses the line between the hand-made and the eco-friendly "green" by blatantly using an excess of these items.

Treyfid builds environs that convey stories of societal norms or abnormalities, economic and political downturns and upswings, mans relationships to each other, to nature, animals, consumerism and in general, human absurdity. Contemporary issues that form his work include global warming, consumerism, the future, deforestation, identity loss, and glamour.

As a rule, Treyfid's dedication to his craft makes great care obvious, while imparting a sense of irony that does not sacrifice global messages. The means of execution that form his experience and his work are varied while at once inclusive, broad while at once focused.

Artist Biography

Treiops Treyfid was born and raised in the Chicago area. Treyfid attended The Corcoran School of Art in Washington DC in the late 80s. During his time in the nation's capital, he developed as an experimental musician under the name Triptic of a Pastel Fern. Later he collaborated with Justin Chearno and others on an art punk band Pitchblende, which toured extensively. He has spent many years releasing albums and touring Nationally and Internationally. The use of sound is important to the context of his work.

While still in DC in the late 90s Treyfid began painting in his “Abstract Repressionist” style. It drew subject matter from the unconscious aided by the techniques of visualization and dream analysis. Upon his arrival to California in 1999 Treyfid continued this style while pursuing venues for his work. In the 2000s his work changed and he began experimenting with mixed media sculpture, installation, and new media performance. Treyfid is currently an active participant in the Downtown Los Angeles art scene where he has a studio at the Crescent Creamery. He has shown extensively in Los Angeles as well as Washington DC.

He recently began writing for a new Los Angeles art blog and supports environmental and socially conscious National organizations. His work has been profiled in several local publications. Inspired by his music background, Treyfid continues to incorporate sound into his art, as well as an extensive online music and video portfolio where these art forms can be viewed in the most current accessible formats available to all. Treyfid is currently developing new media performance projects for 2010.

My name is

Treiops Treyfid. I am a Performance Artist living and working in Los Angeles, Ca. My work is mostly conceptual in nature including a public intervention aspect. I employ simple and convoluted technology, costumes, and audio.

I design my performances first with a very simple script. The details become realized over time as I conceptualize the piece. I carry the idea in my head until all the problems are worked out. There rarely is any real concrete written or…

Emptiness is not an Option

I also have this posted at my art blog here:

So, I went to see some gallery shows this afternoon as I sometimes do. I wasn't in the greatest of moods but, I wasn't figuring on becoming intensely depressed and confused about art in general as well as my own art life. I went to this place which had a show by a performance artist. The show contained almost nothing. There were a couple extremely dull and…
