Performer Director Singer DJ
Valerie Renay is a French-Caribbean performer, director and half of Electro Art Pop Noir duo Noblesse Oblige (

Her work is concerned with notions of identity, our place in society, our spiritual quest and everyday psychosis. Questions, often confrontational, are asked in a brutal, stylised dream like reality. Her vision is raw yet carefully choreographed holding the emotional body at its core.
Valerie Renay spent half her life in London where she trained as an actress with stars’ guru Phillippe Gaulier whose past students include Sasha Baron Cohen, Helena Bonham Carter and Emma Thomson.
Now based in Berlin, she produces work as her alter ego ‘Femme Façade’ making regular appearances at international Performance and Theatre Festivals such as Contradança Asta Festival/Portugal, Pavillion/Bucharest, Hebbel Theatre and Sophiensael Theatre/Berlin, Interregnum Live Art Festival/Copenhagen, The New Burlesque Festival, Copenhagen, as well as Underground Clubs, Fashion Shows, and Art Galleries.

In London, Valerie devised work and performed internationally with Pacitti Company (Spill Festival) Marisa Carnesky (Ghost Train), Clod Ensemble, Gary Stevens, Joshua Sofaer, La Ribot, Song Theatre and also hosted cabaret nights (Whoopee). She stars in Edwin Brienen’s art house movie L’amour Toujours (2008).
Before starting her band Noblesse Oblige she ran her own theatre company In Bed All Day (1997/2003). She gave acting classes and lead ‘creative voice & movement’ workshops at Hoxton Hall.
Valerie currently leads ‘Body & Mind training Sessions’, an adaptable training inspired by her personal practice and knowledge of: Body Weather, Contact Impro Dance, and physical Theatre (Derevo, Yoshi Oida)

I have been researching different ways for a performer to be 'present' and to convey emotions at a deeper level particularly by exploring the 5 senses. I aim to create a situation where you can feed sensorial experiences to an audience. For instance, providing sound, smells, tactile sensations in the dark, or providing visuals in silence. Isolating the different sensations to give each one more power. I also try to cancel the division between audience and performance/performer, creating a common space that can itself go through transformations while the beings in that space are experiencing different sensations.

My desire is to offer a 'complete experience' to the audience without exposing it in any way. I want to get 'inside' of them somehow, while they remain completely safe. I'd like the work to have a visceral rather than intellectual quality even though the subject of my latest show "Golden Ratio" ask the quintessential questions: 'why are we here' or 'What is the meaning of life'. I want the audience to feel rather than think in a immersed in an environment providing delicate yet powerful sensations.
