SPONTANEOUS STORIES ON STAGE at TATWERK | Performative Forschung

March 16, 2019 at 10am to March 17, 2019 at 4pm
What's in between? An actor carries within an infinite number of stories, characters, situations, a whole poetic imaginary universe waiting to unvelop. The possibility to use words to narrate these stories frees them from any material constraints and allows them to inhabit all their possible worlds in the empty space. In this workshop we work on the capacity to go on stage and start narrating an authentic and engaging spontaneous story involving the whole organism. A process made of two…See More

HAMLET / #SEPELAB at TATWERK | Performative Forschung

February 6, 2019 at 10am to February 17, 2019 at 9pm
HAMLET / #SEPELABA research workshop with Pierpaolo SepeTHE RESEARCHWords are never enough to describe feelings. Words are just an approximation of our language; they are incapable of giving back the value to a sensation or to an emotional state.
Most of the times our body fills the void of meaning left back from our words. It is capable of defining and revealing what words try to hide because of their fears. In theatre, if the actor’s body is missing of control or if there is a delay in the…See More

FORGETTING THE BODY at TATWERK | Performative Forschung

January 25, 2019 at 10am to January 27, 2019 at 3pm
Social norms, conventions, etiquette and rules create an environment that shapes our physicality and relation to the body – that is, our “body view”. The way we walk, run, dance, touch ourselves and each other is culturally determined but so deeply ingrained that we readily identify with it and say “this is the way I am”. We don’t remember or seem not to remember that from birth we are exposed to intense training that never really ends, and our behaviour is a way of conforming to the prevailing…See More

Dance Spell: New Year’s Intention Setting Through Movement Improvisation at TATWERK | Performative Forschung

January 18, 2019 at 12pm to January 20, 2019 at 4pm
Movement improvisation strategies for an experiential approach to the 4 natural elements in order to set “magical” intentions for the New Year, expand our personal movement vocabulary and develop performance presence. Dance practice connects us to our bodies and to the world around us through physical sensation. In dance we use awareness, repetition, intention, intuition, imagination and structure to alter the reality both within and outside of ourselves. Any dance practice or performance can…See More

Balinese Masks Theatre Workshop at TATWERK | PERFORMATIVE FORSCHUNG

June 30, 2018 at 2pm to July 1, 2018 at 6pm
What is my own mask? What makes me free? How do I create a new character far enough from myself to be different and close enough to express myself? This workshop will be a theatrical approach to creation through Balinese masks. We will explore these ideas through two avenues: 1. From the body to the mask. 2. From the mask to the body. There is an inner exploration first, to recognize the body as it is at the present moment. Then we will break that moment in the creation of something new.…See More

Our Approach

An open space at the intersection of theatre, dance and performance, where instruction and learning are combined with experimentation and praxis.

We see Tatwerk as a playground for contemporary approaches to the performing arts. In using the word playground, we voice our fundamental concern with pursuing approaches free of dogma and inhibition, in a space where our work can originate from − and aims to further elaborate on − the intersection of theatre, dance and performance.
We approach the performing arts from a bodily perspective. We believe that our strength and asset is the body, and our language is body movement. The body is stage and platform, medium and matter. Every performance is an enquiry into the aesthetics and boundaries of body strength and expression. In centering attention on the body, we aim to transcend the spoken word. Moreover, as a space for exploring post-dramatic theatre, we also engage in experiments that attempt to abandon the concept of drama altogether.
Tatwerk lives and breathes through the commitment, ideas and work of experts − scholars, performers, dancers, directors − and students alike. With everyone who participates in Tatwerk, we encourage the questioning of boundaries − personal, within the field, according to expectations and conventions − and the setting of new ones. We hope that experts and students will make themselves at home at Tatwerk, and work with us to transform the ways in which theatre, dance and performance − as well as Tatwerk as a space − are expressed and can develop in the future.
