Katrina Bugaj is co-founder and artistic director of Out of Balanz, a Copenhagen-based theater company founded in 2006 and dedicated to exploring new forms of storytelling with a particular focus on the language of physical movement and visual imagery sharing the importance of written and spoken text.
With Out of Balanz, Katrina has created (under the banner of director, co-author, performer, or at times all three) ten original productions that have toured in Denmark and internationally; ranging from the intimate and semi-biographical Posthumous Works (Best Male Performer Award at the Birmingham European Theatre Festival 2010) to the funny and kinetic I’m So Close…(co-created with Why Not Theatre) which premiered at the 2008 Summerworks Festival in Toronto (Winner of the Spotlight Award for Best Ensemble) and subsequently toured to The 2008 Dublin Fringe Festival, the 2010 Toronto Freefall Festival and The 2010 Tremors Festival in Vancouver.
Outside of her work with Out of Balanz, Katrina has worked as performer, writer and director on a wide range of projects in North America and Europe, most recently directing the critically acclaimed Popol Se Ha Ido for Decollage Theatre Company in Madrid.
Katrina is a member of the prestigious Lincoln Center Director’s Lab in New York City and her work has been awarded developmental residencies at; Ylioppilasteatteri, Helsinki (2011) and Scenekunstens Udviklingscenter, Odsherred (2010), The Playwrights Workshop, Montreal (2010), The Theatre Centre, Toronto (2008-2010), L’Espace Malraux, Joué-Lés-Tour (2010), Rumble Productions and The Playwrights Theatre Centre, Vancouver (2008), Teatro Cine A. Lamoso, Santa Maria Da Feira (2007).
In addition to creating and producing new work, Katrina believes passionately in the importance of teaching, community and collaboration and has taught internationally, leading workshops for youth and artists alike. In 2001 she was awarded a Grinnell College Award for her work with The Women's Project and Productions outreach program in NYC. Katrina is also an associated artist of English Break, an Italian children's theatre company that teaches French and English through theatre.
Katrina is a graduate of the Ecole Internationale de Theatre Jacques Lecoq (MFA equivalent). She earned a BA in Theatre from Grinnell College, and is a has trained at The National Theater Institute (Eugene O'Neill Center), Royal Shakespeare Company (Stratford-Upon-Avon), Playwrights Horizons (NYU), with various members of Complicite in London and with Anne Bogart and the SITI Company.
