Karolina Spiac, Artistic director, curator, director of ZID Theater, The Netherlands
Karolina Spaic (Belgrade, Former Yugoslavia, 1963) After a training in classical ballet and a study in literature, she graduated from the International Theatre Department at the Arts Academy (HKU) in Utrecht, The Netherlands in 1988. She has since directed many performances in the Netherlands and former Yugoslavia and designed set and light design for them. In her work she combines elements from a variety of disciplines: physical theatre, performance art and media. From 1995 until 2005, she took part in a specialisation study in theatre anthropology at the International School of Theatre Anthropology (ISTA) under Eugenio Barba. Theatre anthropology explores both non-western and western styles of physical theatre and dance styles. Ms.Spaic has published articles in several countries and her texts have been included in a number of books. In 1991 she established the ZID Foundation in Amsterdam, where she directed and designed all performances by ZID Theater. The best examples of these are Dictionary of Nomads (2001), Vincent & I (2005), Milkwhite (2007), From the rooftops of the World (2013), LOVE NOW (2016) all performances that were internationally acclaimed at various theatre festivals and theatres abroad. She also teaches workshops and training classes in physical and multimedia theatre, both in the Netherlands and abroad. In 2016 she established an international multidisciplinary festival Explorez. Spaic: “By creating space at the intersection of art, culture and tomorrow’s society we want to anticipate new times that will have new needs”.
