Performance Discipline
Performance artist and DJ
Fernando Ribeiro (1979 - )

Performance artist, lives and works in Curitiba, south of Brazil. Graduated in Visual Arts at Universidade Tuiuti do Paraná (2002) and post graduated in Aesthetics and Philosophy of Art at Universidade Tuiuti do Paraná (2010). His theoretical and practical works about performance are founded in the matter of the action itself.

He began his studies about performance in 1999, having presented his first work in 2001, in Curitiba. During the last decade, he was among the artists that contributed to the propagation, reflection and debate about performance art in his city. Besides performing several of his works during this period, he also promoted the performance art genre by making lectures about its history, as well as workshops.

His practical work is based in exploring the action as an artistic potency and power. By raising issues such as “What can I do?” and “How can I do it?”, Ribeiro develops works that arise from his person and explore the action in two ways:
1. Exploring the teleological structure of action, the ends we intend to achieve with our actions;
2. Exploring action as interaction, on how our actions arise from us and are directed to the other.

This way, the artist assumes the role of agent, with its due responsibilities and consequences, aware that his actions have the power of public signification and intelligibility, being open to the most diverse range of interpretation.

In the theoretical field, he aims at investigating performance art through the philosophy of Paul Ricoeur. Focused in Ricoeur's works that involve hermeneutics, philosophy of language and philosophy of action, Ribeiro's studies arise from the action considered as conceptual plurality. The action, consequently, emerges to Ribeiro as the link of a web that involves not only the action itself, but also the body, the reasons, intentions, movements etc.

Ribeiro has already performed his works in several Brazilian cities, such as Curitiba, Florianópolis, Belo Horizonte, Salvador and São Paulo. He took part in the first international performance art festival in the country, MIP – Manifestação Internacional de Performance (International Performance Manifestation), Belo Horizonte, 2003. He was also present in the exhibit Corpo na Cidade (Body in the City): Performance em Curitiba, curated by historian Paulo Reis and that went over the whole history of performance art in the city since the 70's. Other international events in which he took part are Trampolim Festival in Vitória (2011) and Performa Paço (2011) in São Paulo. In April 2012 travelled to USA and presented his work in Defibrillator Performance Art Gallery, Chicago; Mobius, Boston and Grace Exhibition Space, New York. Today organize and curate the performance art monthly night p.ARTE in Curitiba.

Action painting, happening and performance art: from the action as significant factor to the action as work in the visual arts

Posted on September 27, 2011 at 9:39am 0 Comments

The action was inserted as a significant element in visual arts by action painting, expressed through the work of artists such as Jackson Pollock and also by the theoretical work of Harold Rosenberg. Through Paul Ricoeur’s philosophy of action, with its main focus on conceptual framework of action, a precise analysis of the comprehension of action allows us to make a specific study about the action itself in visual arts. Following this line of thought, there…
