Performance Discipline
Annette Arlander (born 1956) is an artist, researcher and a pedagogue. She is one of the pioneers of Finnish performance art (in 1980's) and belongs to the trail blazers of artistic research (in 1990's). She was professor of performance art and theory at Theatre Academy, Helsinki 2001-2013. Arlander’s art work is focused on performing landscape by means of video or recorded voice. Her research interests include performance as research, performance studies, site specificity, landscape, and the environment. She is currently the principal investigator of the Academy of Finland funded research project How to do things with performance? See here

After finishing my twelve-year project of performing landscape according to the Chinese Calendar, and showing the last part, Year of the Snake - Swinging, at Muu gallery in Helsinki in May 2014, I am spending time at the ArsBioarctica Residency at Kilpisjärvi in the "thumb" of Finland, high up in the far North. Although my work is not bio art, strictly speaking, I have enjoyed exploring new (and old) ways…


Year of the Snake

During the year of the snake, approximately once a week, I am swinging on the western shore of Harakka Island in Helsinki, and recording the action on video to create a documentation of the chances in the landscape. Sometimes I invite colleagues to swing as well and. I keep a tri-lingual blog of the project.
