New York butoh star Vangeline conjures ghosts of two passionate giants – founder of butoh Tatsumi Hijikata and composer Ludwig van Beethoven – in her hypnotic, electrifying and award-winning solo performance “Butoh Beethoven”.

“We are drawn into a world of passionate struggle, huge pain and the glories of composition, of performance, of pouring one’s soul into beauty to combat torment… Vangeline’s exquisite control allows change where there seems no movement…” 4-star review by Edinburgh Spotlight

Vangeline is an award-winning Butoh dancer, and choreographer. She is the Founder and Artistic Director of The VangelineTheater Inc, and the New York Butoh Institute. Vangeline's work has been heralded in publications such as the New York Times (“captivating”), Los AngelesTimes, (“moves with the clockwork deliberation of a practiced Japanese Butoh artist”) and LA Weekly to name a few. Time OUT Chicago named Vangeline's, "one of the best Dance Visits of 2011."

Age and aging. Losing our looks and losing our mind. Coping with memories, with regrets, with ghosts of dreams that have died, with fear of death, with letting go.
So much loss, and yet… what do we gain?
Nothing compares with the wisdom of mountains.

Yael Gaathon is the artistic director of the Butoh company Blue Cliff, Aarhus, Denmark. She started her career as a theater actress in Israel and was a member of the internationally acclaimed Itim Theater Ensemble. Today Yael Gaathon choreographs, directs, performs and teaches Butoh and theater, working among others with National Theater School (DK) and the Danish Actors Association.
Her appearance on stage was marked as: „… dance with thrilling energy” (The New York Times), “… one of the cast’s 10 remarkable actors”, "Tall, striking Yael Gaathon...radiates serenity in repose" (San Francisco Examiner), "Yael (Gaathon) ... is brilliant" (Information, DK)

with Vangeline, Yael Gaathon, Nobuyoshi Asai, Motimaru

21 May 2016, 20:00, Tatwerk BERLIN

From now on we hold a series of events to have a chance to discover diverse contemporary Butoh artists, whose remarkable dedication and contribution inspires and makes believe: Butoh has the future, and it is molded nowadays by young contemporary artists.
On one hand, Butoh is much influenced while artists bring their backgrounds; on the other hand, Butoh transmits impulses to other arts, and the results are astonishing.
Let us follow this live movement as it is created by the artists today.

At the Contemporary Butoh Meetings Vol 1, we are happy to introduce in a video interview Vangeline (USA/FR) and Yael Gaathon (DK/ISR), as well as Nobuyoshi Asai (JP). In the third part of the program, Motimaru Dance Company (Tiziana Longo, DE/IT, & Motoya Kondo, DE/JP) will give an artist talk “Esthetic and sensibility of Emptiness in Japanese butoh and comparative analysis of Eastern Culture of India, Bali, Tibet, Japan” + video screening from documentaries of field work research.

Seeking strong and independent performers for an experimental installation at the Flutgraben on 16 April, as part of the Space/Time Festival. It will continue the journey of the pink heads of Action in the Underground (see below) but through another symbolic dimension.

Action in the Underground

Space/Time Festival

This time it will be an intervention into the theatre and ritual of performance itself.

The performance will embody one hour of improvisation, similar to method acting. We will have 2 days of rehearsal (April 14-15) with the performance on the evening of the 16th. The fee is 50 euro.

The concept is a secret and won't be revealed to the public until the event. If you are interested, please write me before 6 March with a message of interest and a link to your work. Auditions will be 30 minutes long, and take place during the first and second week of March.

TEN PEN CHii Art Labor celebrates 20th anniversary performing "ASO-Bi - Spiel".

"TEN - the heaven, CHi - the earth, PEN - the change, the last i is for other. When the heaven changes, the earth changes as well. Shortly:" Natural Disasters "(Japanese). The Japanese-German art groupe creates performances since 1994. Therein is everything: the twitching human flesh, sounds that become music, colors drawn from the light, installations as a framework and at the same world's draft. Perception is born out of the dance, the space, the light, the music being drawn together and of course the power of images plays its role.
TEN PEN CHii doesn't color the inferno. The group rather finds means of expression to portray the violent relationship of humankind, man-made nature and technology. It does not forget that many of the inventions go beyond the plans of their initiators."(Text: Tom Mustroph).

“A performance-maker´s toolbox: Addressing emotional states and their physical manifestations”

This workshop is inspired by Romain´s collaboration with Les Ballets C de la B. The work of this Belgian company has often been described as “radical theatre” and its language has been evolving towards the self defined “bastard dance”. Through a series of free-form open ended improvisations, the participants are invited to discover their unique physicality, to increase their sense of self-awareness and to explore the deep & profound emotions that characterize each moving human body. Such method will be particularly beneficial for actors and dancers encouraging them to first investigate several specific physical states (the container or vessel) and emotional states (the content) and to secondly recognise how both these emotional and physical beings are intertwined, how they interact with/on each other as well as identifying the physical manifestations of specific emotions. Feeling is not a static state and through the workshop the emphasis will be put on how to express the emotions in movement.

With the motto “Body is movement and movement is dance”, participants will be encourage to experiment, question, dare and most importantly, to move. In the course of the week, participants will be encouraged to observe how their emotions influence the reactive body and which physical vocabulary is therefore generated (and vice versa) and to diversify and to enrich their own personal creative palette.
