Event Description

ImPulsTanz 2018 presents from 12th July to 12th August not only highlights at the interface between music and dance on the biggest stages of Vienna, such as Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker / Rosas at Burgtheater or François Chaignaud at Volkstheater, but also uses the unique architecture of museum spaces to stretch the limits of dance and performance.

This year’s ImPulsTanz festival will be opened by an entertaining and at the same time almost painfully touching solo by Dave St. Pierre in the Odeon theatre. In Néant – Void, the Canadian choreographer, immersed in a sophisticated sound, light and video concept, commutes between reason and insanity, between man and animal. Between human and machine mediates Simon Mayer in his piece Oh Magic in the Volkstheater. Therefore, he assembles a futuristic band of performers and robots. On the other hand, François Chaignaud casts a glance into the past with Nino Laisné and four live musicians, also in the Volkstheater. In Romances inciertos, un autre Orlando, the exceptional French performer dances and sings to Spanish melodies from the 16th and 17th centuries.

Two artists at ImPulsTanz 2018 dedicate their works to the founder of Butoh, Tatsumi Hijikata, and his works: In UnBearable Darkness, the Singapore-born choreographer and media artist Choy Ka Fai brings Hijikata back on stage through fascinating, ghostly, digital effects and explores a highly topical angle of this “Dance of Darkness”. The American Trajal Harrell conjures the Butoh master on the catwalk in In the Mood for Frankie and is kissed by other muses, such as the director Wong Kar Wai and the singer Sade.

The programme in the mumok is completed by new and adapted works by Ivo Dimchev, Clara Furey, Christine Gaigg, Anne Juren, Thomas Köck & Andreas Spechtl, Ofelia Jarl Ortega, Akemi Takeya as well as Karin Pauer and Mathias Ringgenberg aka PRICE in the context of the [8:tension] Young Choreographers’ Series.

In addition, the festival represents once more varied positions from the Austrian dance scene with Cie. Willi Dorner, Florentina Holzinger, Liquid Loft / Chris Haring, Michikazu Matsune, Elisabeth B. Tambwe and a concert by the cowbirds.

Since 2001, the [8:tension] Young Choreographers’ Series has presented new and exciting works from dance and choreography within ImPulsTanz. In 2018, these are eight current positions that test new formats and perspectives for the genres beyond the classical theatre stage. For example, Ofelia Jarl Ortega, Karin Pauer and Mathias Ringgenberg aka PRICE perform in the mumok. In Us Swerve, a three-hour durational performance on roller skates, Alex Baczynski-Jenkins causes the mumok Hofstallung to vibrate. The new ImPulsTanz Young Choreographers’ Award, supported by Casinos Austria, will be awarded on 11th August at the Kasino am Schwarzenbergplatz. Further performances, which are in the running for the prize, are by Silke Huysmans & Hannes Dereere, Jamila Johnson-Small, Jaha Koo and Shamel Pitts.
